Prof. Filippo Drago graduated summa cum laude in Medicine and Surgery from the School of Medicine of the University of Catania, Italy in 1978. In 1982 he obtained his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands. He worked for a long time at the Veterans Hospital, Chapel Hill University, USA. He obtained a specialization in Neurology in 1986. Prof. Drago is currently Professor of Pharmacology at the School of Medicine and Surgery, University of Catania. He was President of the CRO Unifarm, Clinical Pharmacology Research Center, until 2012. Since 2001 he has been a member of the Committee for the Evaluation of Medicines of the Ministry of Health and from 2004 to 2012 of the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) as a member of the technical-scientific commission. From 2012 to 2015 he was a member of the Prices and Reimbursements Committee, AIFA. From 2012 to 2014 he was President of the European Federation of Pharmacological Societies (EPHAR). From February 2019 to August 2023, he worked as President of the Association of Ocular Pharmacology (AOPT), of which he is now past-President. He is editor-in-chief of Frontiers in Drug Discovery and Experimental Pharmacology and associate editor of the Journal of Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Since October 2019 he was President and since March 2026, he is Scientific Director of the Center for Research and Consultancy in Regulatory Affairs and HTA (CERD), University of Catania. He is Gold Ribbon Fellow of ARVO (FARVO) and Fellow of the Association of Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics (FAOPT). He has served as member of different ARVO Committee: (2005-2009) Member of the Animals in Research Committee, (2006-2009) Member of the Annual Meeting Program Committee (AMPC) of the Section PH; (2011-still running) Chairman of the Italian Branch of the ARVO (IT-ARVO); (2012-2018) Member of the Professional Development and Education Committee. He is the author of over 600 articles published in peer-reviewed journals in the field of Ocular Pharmacology and Neuroscience.
